What is the Hazard Perception Test?
The hazard perception section tests your ability to spot developing hazards on real roads. It's shown immediately after the multiple-choice section and uses 14 video clips captured from a driver's perspective.
How is it Scored?
Each clip contains one developing hazard (one clip has two). You score between 0 and 5 points per hazard — the earlier you click after the hazard starts to develop, the higher your score. The pass mark is 44 out of 75.
Important: clicking repeatedly in a pattern (e.g., rapid clicks) will score you zero for that clip — the system detects this as cheating.
What Counts as a Developing Hazard?
A developing hazard is something that will cause you to take action — slow down, change direction, or stop. Examples include:
- A pedestrian stepping off the pavement
- A cyclist pulling out of a junction
- A parked car door opening
- A child running into the road
Top Tips
- Watch, don't just wait — actively scan the whole scene rather than fixating on one area.
- Click as soon as you see the hazard developing — not when it's fully formed.
- One deliberate click per hazard is enough. Don't spam the button.
- Practise with real clips — watching dashcam footage or using an official practice app builds your reaction timing faster than any written guide.
