Everything You Need to Know About the UK Theory Test
The DVSA theory test is the first formal hurdle on your journey to a full UK driving licence. This guide covers the complete test format, how to revise efficiently, and what to expect on the day.
Booking Your Theory Test
You can book your theory test at gov.uk or through the DVSA booking service. You'll need your UK driving licence number and a debit/credit card. The fee is £31 and slots are available up to six months in advance.
Choose a test centre convenient to you — there are over 150 centres across England, Scotland, and Wales.
What ID Do You Need?
You must bring your valid UK photocard driving licence to the test centre. No other ID is accepted. If you forget it, you'll lose your test fee.
On the Day: What to Expect
- Arrive at least 15 minutes early.
- Check in at reception and store your belongings in a locker (no bags, phones, or revision materials allowed).
- Complete a short tutorial before the multiple-choice questions begin.
- After the multiple-choice, take a break (optional) before the hazard perception clips.
- Get your result immediately on screen. A letter confirming your pass certificate is issued on screen.
How Long is a Theory Test Pass Valid?
Your theory test pass certificate is valid for 2 years. You must pass your practical driving test within this period, otherwise you'll need to retake the theory test.
