Ontario G1 Knowledge Test — Everything You Need to Know

The G1 knowledge test is the first step in Ontario's Graduated Licensing System (GLS). It's a computerized multiple-choice test administered at DriveTest Centres across Ontario.

Test Format

• Total questions: 40
• Section 1: 20 questions on road signs (must score 16+)
• Section 2: 20 questions on traffic rules and situations (must score 16+)
• Pass mark: 80% on each section — you must pass both to get your G1
• Time limit: No limit (take as long as you need)
• Fee: $158.25 CAD (covers G1 test + 5-year licence)

What's on the G1 Test?

Questions are drawn from the Official MTO Driver's Handbook. Key topics:

• Traffic signs, signals, and pavement markings
• Right-of-way rules at intersections, crosswalks, and roundabouts
• Speed limits in school zones (15 km/h when children present), community safety zones, and residential areas
• Rules for passing, following distances, and lane changes
• Alcohol and drug impairment laws (Ontario's zero tolerance for G1/G2 drivers)
• Sharing the road with cyclists, motorcycles, and pedestrians

G1 Restrictions After Passing

With a G1 licence you can only drive when accompanied by a fully licenced driver with 4+ years experience. You cannot drive on 400-series highways (unless accompanied by a driving instructor) or between midnight and 5:00 a.m.

How to Book

Book online at drivetest.ca or visit any DriveTest Centre in Ontario. Take government-issued photo ID and proof of Ontario residency. You must be at least 16 years old.

Tips to Pass First Time

1. Read the full Official MTO Driver's Handbook — every question comes from it.
2. Pay special attention to the road signs section — Ontario uses some signs that differ from other provinces.
3. Ontario's zero-tolerance alcohol policy for G1/G2 drivers (vs 0.08% for fully licenced drivers) is frequently tested.
4. Practice with timed mock tests to build exam confidence before booking your real test.
